The Netherlands has concluded several new double tax treaties, entering into force on January 1, 2011. The new treaty with the United Kingdom replaces the 1980 treaty. For taxpayers from the United Kingdom, the new treaty will be effective from April 2011.
In addition, treaties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia as well as an amendment of the treaty with Slovakia came into effect. The treaty with the UAE was already in force since June 2, 2010, for withholding taxes. The extensive network of treaties is one of the advantages of the Netherlands as a location for businesses and individuals.
Agreements on the exchange of information
In addition to the conclusion of new double tax treaties, the number of countries with which the Netherlands has agreements on the exchange of information on subjects such as savings and dividends has increased. These agreements are primarily aimed at the prevention of tax evasion. New agreements have been concluded with the Bahamas, Monaco, and Liechtenstein (effective from December 1, 2010), San Marino, and Belize (effective from January 1, 2011), and Malaysia (also effective from January 1, 2011, however, this is an amendment to a double tax treaty).
