Mees Vergouwen
Senior Manager
Mees began his career at Meijburg in 2025, but already has nearly ten years of experience in the field. His specializations include international tax law, EU law, corporate income tax, and Tax Controversy & Litigation. Mees’s expertise lies particularly at the intersection of international tax law and EU law, where he focuses, for example, on the complex interactions between tax treaties and European directives.
In 2023, Mees obtained his PhD at Leiden University with his dissertation ‘The Effect of Directives Within the Area of Direct Taxation on the Interpretation and Application of Tax Treaties’. This work was awarded the Dissertation Prize by the Dutch Association for Tax Science and the Mitchell B. Carroll Prize by the International Fiscal Association. In addition to his position at Meijburg, Mees is a university lecturer at Leiden University and also gives guest lectures at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. He is also an editor at NTFR.
